Hobby India: How a family turned sanitizer stands business into a successful craft business?
How a Surat Family Turned a Loss into a Profit by
Making Craft Products from Sanitizer Stands?
The Corona pandemic was challenging for everyone, but some people managed to turn this crisis into an opportunity. One such inspiring story is Vaibhav Sutaria from Surat, his wife Shruti, and his sister Khyati. They initially made sanitizer stands to sell during the Corona outbreak, but they could not sell enough and faced a loss. However, they did not give up and transformed their business into a profitable craft venture.
The beginning of the idea:
Vaibhav Sutaria made 1000 stands for sanitizer bottles during the Corona epidemic, but his investment was jeopardized as he failed to sell them. He and his family, his wife Shruti and sister Khyati, decided to manufacture an alternative product using the sanitizer stands. They made craft items like key chains, rakhis, and many things. They created a page named Hobby India on social media and founded a company with the same name. Their products gradually became popular, and many artists bought their artistic items to create their projects. They modified their products according to customer demand, and the sales of their items increased significantly.
The expansion of the business:
They also designed the products in various categories. Vaibhav’s wife, working as a patent analyst in a company, left her job to join her husband. His sister Khyati also left her job at an animation company to join Hobby India. In 2021, Vaibhav developed a website for the company. Today, 30 employees are working in the company, all female, because Vaibhav believes that women have to face many difficulties to get a job. The staff does the tasks from making products to dispatching them. Vaibhav handles the purchasing department, and Shruti and Khyati manage the manufacturing.
The prospects:
In 2020, the turnover of Hobby India was 35 lakhs, which increased to three crores in 2023. The Sutarias had appeared in the program of the famous Shark Tank but turned down the 50 lakhs offered by judges Ameet and Vinita. They are confident about their business and hope to grow it further.
